This exquisite sterling silver pendant houses a bronze coin featuring the likeness of Emperor Valentinian. Gracing the reverse side of the coin is the image of Victory (Nike) in forward motion.

Valentinian I, also known as Valentinian the Great, held the Roman imperial throne from 364 to 375. Upon assuming power, he appointed his brother Valens as co-emperor, entrusting him with governance over the eastern provinces while Valentinian retained control over the western regions.

Throughout his reign, Valentinian demonstrated military prowess, notably securing victories against formidable adversaries such as the Alamanni, Quadi, and Sarmatians. The Battle of Solicinium in 367 stands out as a significant triumph over the Alamanni. Under the leadership of his skilled general Count Theodosius, revolts in Africa and the Great Conspiracy—an orchestrated assault on Roman Britain by Picts, Scots, and Saxons—were thwarted.

Valentinian's legacy extends beyond military achievements; he was the last emperor to oversee campaigns across both the Rhine and Danube rivers. Recognizing the importance of fortifications, he embarked on extensive rebuilding and enhancement projects along the empire's frontiers, even constructing fortresses deep within enemy territories.

The success of Valentinian's reign contrasts starkly with the rapid decline that followed his passing, earning him the distinction of being hailed as the "last great western emperor." Establishing the Valentinianic dynasty, his sons Gratian and Valentinian II succeeded him in governing the western half of the empire.
